    The Future Energy and Business Development function is responsible for setting the strategic direction for Energy Markets and linking this strategy through to underlying performance across the organisation through key decision support activities across the core operating units of Energy Markets.

    The Analysis and Development team is responsible for assisting the organisation in achieving its growth objectives by understanding and quantifying the markets in which Origin operates, and seeking out, evaluating and advising on energy market investments, acquisitions and other portfolio development activities, including new growth markets.

    The role :

    The Market Analyst role will assist in providing qualitative and quantitative analysis of natural gas, coal, oil and LPG markets and assist in determining the impact on Origin’s contract and asset portfolios.

    The role will actively develop and maintain data systems to support the team’s analytic, modelling and reporting framework.

    A key part of the role will be working with other groups (eg. Market Risk and Forecasting) that have common interests in the data to define data structures and processes and has the following remit :

  • Focus on commodity markets function and how these markets affect Origin’s business.
  • Provide prompt access to market data, commodity portfolio data, retail data and financials to support analysis and reporting;
  • Identify new data sources, devise processes to obtain the data, transform and store in structured data tables.
  • Complete multiple projects in parallel in a time-efficient manner
  • Identify new data and reporting technologies and programming languages that will improve the data and reporting process
  • Identification and collation of data and maintaining these sources.
  • Communicating data integrity issues in a timely manner;
  • Developing, improving and streamlining reporting across the team;
  • Liaise with peers, management and external teams;
  • Actively promote the Origin values

  • Communicate in a way that promotes staff engagement;

  • A strong desire to learn about commodity markets and how they affect Origin’s business
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in a quantitative discipline (eg. mathematics, finance, commerce, economics, engineering)
  • Some commercial experience working with data
  • Desire to learn about global oil, gas and coal markets.
  • Highly numerate, analytical
  • Competent in Python and SQL
  • Proactive nature
  • Ability to grasp, communicate and comment upon new, complex issues
  • Ability to interact with staff at all levels
  • Demonstrated commitment to continual learning
