The Reach Program is a new pilot program being administered by the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (the Department).

It is an in-house program that involves recruiting employees with autism to undertake a number of roles within the Department.

It is part of the Department’s commitment to promoting inclusion. The Department recognises the value employees with autism can bring to organisations across a number of areas with the program aiming to match autistic talent with business areas.

Eligibility / Other requirements

To be part of the Reach Program applicants must be able to provide evidence of a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Suitable evidence is a certificate or letter from a registered medical practitioner.

Successful applicants may be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at the Baseline Vetting level. To be eligible for employment with the Department, an applicant must be an Australian citizen.

An applicant's suitability for employment with the department will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process.

This process includes a requirement for the applicant to undergo and satisfy a National Police Check, referee checks, character clearance and where relevant a pre-employment medical assessment and specified mandatory qualification(s) validation.

  • Recruitment will be through a merit based competitive process tailored to the needs of autistic people. If shortlisted, applicants will be asked to undertake a work trial activity in lieu of an interview.

    The process will focus on applicants demonstrating their capability to undertake the role.
