They will use GIS software to analyze spatial and non-spatial information to inform business decisions and optical network design.
Working with fibre providers and other Viasat Engineering teams the Optical Network GIS Specialist will load and analyse fibre asset and geospatial data to support the design and deployment of the optical network.
This role will work locally in Australia and will form part of the APAC Engineering team. Job Responsibilities
Design and maintain spatial data layers and associated databases.
Manage data conversions and data import.
Query and analyse fibre path information using GIS tools to inform business decision making and optimise the optical network topology.
Support and manage GIS applications and databases based on business needs.
Plan and coordinate GIS activities to meet project and network objectives.
Analyze and resolve GIS system issues in a timely manner.
Support designing and creating the geospatial database.
Provide technical guidance to GIS users when needed.
Stay abreast of the latest developments in the GIS field.
Work with fibre providers to find a balanced cost-optimised solution that satisfies the functional and performance objectives of the optical network.
Support the management, refinement, and maintenance of the optical network cost model.
Analyse system requirements, identify gaps, and advise on implementable solutions.
Participate and contribute to projects, including design, installation, integration, troubleshooting and acceptance activities.
Resolve issues experienced in optical networks operated and supported by Viasat.
Manage network incidents by facilitating the acknowledgment, triage, and restoration of network functionality and performance.
System quality analysis to proactively monitor and identify quality trends in the optical network.
Travel to field sites to implement, support, and maintain optical network systems.
Support optical networks operated by Viasat outside of normal working hours as part of established on-call rosters. Requirements
At least four years of GIS experience (preferable ArcGIS).
Good and effective verbal and written communication skills.
Experience working with local and remote teams.
Good time management, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
Experienced and competent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Fundamental understanding of optical network technologies and architectures, including DWDM systems.
Knowledge of the principles, practices, terminology, and trends in geographic information system design and usage for optical network design.
Knowledge of statistics, and spatial analysis.
Knowledge of database management best practices
Must be a citizen of Australia Preferences
Geospatial Engineering degree or equivalent tertiary qualification.
Ability to take ownership of the role and work autonomously.
Ability to prioritise, organise, and manage multiple tasks effectively.
Strong MS Office Skills, including Outlook, Word, Excel, Visio, and Project (or equivalents)
Extensive GIS tool experience (ArcGIS desirable)
