Graduate School Scholarships (UQGSS) includes RTP

Research environment

UQ ranks in the top 50 as measured by the Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities. The University also ranks 46 in the QS World University Rankings, 42 in the US News Best Global Universities Rankings, 66 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and 54 in the Academic Ranking of World Universities.

The award

UQ Graduate School Scholarships (UQGSS) are awarded to domestic and international students.

Students will be awarded either an Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship or a UQ-funded scholarship via a competitive process.

Both of these provide a living allowance and a tuition fee offset. For international applicants who will study in Australia on a student visa, the scholarship also includes an allowance for single overseas student health cover.

These scholarships are usually awarded through the Graduate School's Scholarship Rounds.

2021 Round 1*

Due to the impacts of COVID-19 offers for offshore international candidates will be for a commencement of no earlier than April 2021, pending border restrictions easing.

  • Current UQ students applying, who have not yet received their final results from their coursework programs, will not receive offers until after results from that semester have been published.
  • Selection criteria

    To be eligible you must :

  • be nominated by an enrolling school or institute at UQ
  • be assessed by the Graduate School as meeting all conditions for admission to the higher degree by research program.
  • not be receiving a living allowance award, or scholarship providing a benefit greater than 75% of the RTP Scholarship living allowance rate to undertake the higher degree by research program.
  • To be eligible to apply, you must also meet the entry requirements for Higher Degrees by Research at UQ. Applications will be judged on a competitive basis taking into account the applicant’s previous academic record, publication record, honours and awards, and employment history.

    Candidates are assessed on the following key areas using the scholarship selection criteria matrix (DOCX, 25.2 KB)

  • Candidate : Quality of the candidate including academic performance, evidence of research capability, quality of research project.
  • Environment : Quality of the research environment including resourcing.
  • Advisory Team : Quality of advisory team including record of successful supervision, appropriate advisory load, complementary expertise.
  • Scholarship

    The 2020 Research Training Program (RTP) living allowance stipend rate is AUD$28,092 per annum (indexed annually), which is tax-free for three years with two possible extensions of up to 6 months each in approved circumstances ( conditions apply ).

    It also includes tuition fees and Overseas Student Health Cover for international applicants.

    How to apply

    Apply for this scholarship when you apply for a higher degree by research. There is no separate application for this scholarship.

    To be considered for a living allowance scholarship in the first round after confirmation, contact the HDR Liaison Officer in your school or institute.

    Before submitting an application you should :

  • check your eligibility for a PhD ( MPhil eligibility differs)*
  • Make sure you Identify a researcher with relevant expertise and get their agreement to support your project.
  • prepare your documentation

  • Select 'I would like to be considered for a UQ scholarship to cover a living allowance stipend and tuition fee expenses'.
