Job Description Senior Writer, Regulatory, Compliance and Investigations

Why do we have this role?

Practical Law is a time-saving online legal guidance and know-how solution. It is relatively new to Australia, despite its deep history in the United Kingdom and the United States.

We're still growing our local offering, and we're looking for a creative, commercial, experienced insolvency lawyer to help us scope, project manage, create and deliver a new suite of resources to help lawyers advise their clients on how to comply with regulatory frameworks and how to deal with regulators, regulatory investigations and regulatory litigation.

Practical Law empowers law firms and legal departments to act with confidence by relying on up-to-date practical guides, precedents, and legal updates that help them navigate their way through legal issues and focus their deeper research.

Practical Law's content is created by a high calibre team comprised of ex-top tier and senior in-house lawyers with substantial practicing experience.

Key responsibilities

As a Senior Writer, Regulatory, Compliance and Investigations, you will write and develop premium content resources to be used by practising lawyers and play a key role in the ongoing success of the team.

In this highly collaborative role, and with guidance from the Head of Dispute Resolution, you will use your experience gained from legal practice to :

  • Plan, research, draft, edit and update premium quality know-how resources for the Regulatory and Investigations practice area, including practice notes, standard documents and clauses with drafting notes, checklists and legal updates.
  • Keep up-to-date with the law and monitor the latest legal, practice and market developments.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with legal practitioners in the market to ensure content remains relevant and reflects latest practices.
  • Support the sales and marketing teams to build customer relationships and participate in marketing initiatives to grow the profile of the Practical Law brand.
  • Key attributes :

    To be successful in this role you will need to meet following requirements :

  • Admitted to practice as a lawyer in Australia, with minimum of at least 5 years PQE gained at a top-tier or highly regarded mid-tier firm, in an in-house corporate counsel role or at a relevant government regulatory agency.
  • Background and career experience in one or more of the following : Providing advice to clients on how to comply with regulatory frameworks (primarily Corporations / Competition and Consumer / ASIC / APRA legislation, delegated legislation, and any directions, codes or guidelines created by a regulator or minister), including, for example, reviewing a client's product disclosure statements, internal policies, marketing material and other documents to ensure they are compliant.
  • Prosecuting or defending regulatory litigation.Conducting or responding to regulatory investigations, particularly relating to corporations or competition and consumer law.

  • The creativity to conceive and evaluate ideas and approaches.
  • An innate curiosity, interest and passion for learning about and writing on legal topics.
  • Excellent project management, research, technical, drafting and communication skills.
  • An ability to inspire and motivate people to deliver required outcomes.
