The Welfare Officer Level 1 / 2 is responsible and accountable for providing a professional service to consumers and their family / carers of the Inpatient Mental Health Service at Sutherland Hospital.

  • The position assesses and identifies consumers’ welfare needs and undertakes appropriate interventions; provides information, assistance and support to consumers, families and / or carers as required;
  • provides advice on eligibility for benefit entitlements, assists with applications, and liaises with government agencies to ensure entitlements are received and maintained;
  • and develops and maintains welfare resources for consumers, families, carers and other clinicians.

    Selection Criteria :

  • Qualifications as a Welfare Officer in accordance with Schedule C of the NSW Health Service Health Professionals (State) Award.
  • Understanding of mental illness, contemporary interventions and the ability to apply a recovery framework to clinical interventions.
  • Demonstrated skills and knowledge in psychosocial assessments, guardianship, advocacy and group work.
  • Demonstrated skills in the provision of education programs to consumers, carers and professional colleagues.
  • Demonstrated skills in complex discharge planning activities and interagency networking.
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and to exercise independent professional judgement on routine matters, commensurate with years of experience.
  • Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication, and interpersonal skills, and the ability to proactively engage with patients / clients to enhance service delivery.
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement and evidence-based practice and a commitment to ongoing clinical and professional learning.
