    About the Position

    Breathing Space is an innovative Pilot funded by the Department of Human Services as part of the Child and Family Service System (CFSS) redesign.

    The service is part of the CFSS reform for providing an early intervention response to individuals and families most in need.

    The program focuses on young women, aged under 25, who have experienced removal of children from their care and who may have had a care experience themselves.

    The therapeutic model for Breathing Space draws on the doctoral research completed by Dr J Amos in 2017 and other trauma-related literature, and clinical experience.

    The model is underpinned by the Aboriginal design criteria that includes privileging the voices of Aboriginal people, promoting self-determination, intergenerational trauma and the importance of culture as a strength.

    The Aboriginal Case Manager will work with young women to develop meaningful engagement and lead case planning to establish a shared understanding of personal challenges, risk factors, and strengths, and create achievable goals.

    The Case Manager will support the enhancement of the young women’s natural supports including family and social relationships, connection to culture, as well as to their community networks and services.

    Some of the key duties in this role include :

  • Implementing the Breathing Space Model in collaboration with the team
  • Establishing and developing respectful and transparent and culturally responsive engagement with young women to assess their individual strengths and areas of support need and together form a case plan
  • Working in partnership with other services, including health, education NDIS providers and other community stakeholders to provide a collaborative and holistic approach to strengthening young women’s independence and wellbeing.
  • Essential Criteria

  • Social Work Degree or equivalent
  • Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young women with complex needs
  • Sound theoretical knowledge of the impact of intergenerational trauma, grief and loss and factors affecting wellbeing as well as relevant therapeutic interventions
  • Case Management Experience
  • Knowledge of Child Protection Legislation
  • Valid Department of Human Services (DHS) Working with Children Check (previously known as Child-Related Employment Screening Clearance’
  • Desirable Criteria

  • Experience using Athena Penelope electronic client management system
